The charges stem from an investigation by special counsel Jack Smith into whether Trump broke the law by holding onto hundreds of classified documents at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, after leaving the White House in 2021. Prosecutors have said that Trump took roughly 300 classified documents to Mar-a-Lago, including some 100 that were seized by the FBI last August in a search of the home.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He has denied any wrongdoing and has accused Smith of conducting a “witch hunt.”
Trump was arraigned on Tuesday afternoon in federal court in Miami. He was released on $100,000 bond and ordered to surrender his passport. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 12.
The charges against Trump are the most serious legal challenges he has faced since leaving office. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
Trump’s arrest has sent shockwaves through Washington and the Republican Party. It remains to be seen how the charges will affect Trump’s political future. He has repeatedly hinted that he plans to run for president again in 2024, but it is unclear whether he will be able to overcome the legal challenges he faces.
The arrest of a former president is a rare occurrence in American history. It is a sign of the deep political divisions that have roiled the country in recent years.
